Related work: comparing prior surveys
Find prior surveys, rate each on your review's dimensions, and get the justification table that shows what your review adds.
On this page
Reviewers and editors ask: why another review? The Related work tab answers with a comparison of prior surveys, the justification table (like Table 1 of many IEEE survey papers).
Finding prior surveys
Add surveys:
- from the review's own records;
- from a BibTeX file;
- by hand;
- with survey search: it searches OpenAlex, arXiv and Semantic Scholar for surveys, reviews, overviews and tutorials on your review's key terms (from its keywords, question and criteria). Each query runs twice, over all years and over the last three years, so recent work is not crowded out by older, highly cited work. The AI then judges the closest candidates from their titles and abstracts (is it a survey, and how relevant is it). Nothing joins the comparison until you add it.
Rating them
The table's columns are your review's dimensions, usually its main categories. Each survey is rated on each dimension:
| Mark | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ✓ | Comprehensive coverage |
| Moderate | Structured coverage |
| Partial | Limited discussion |
| ✗ | Not covered |
The table also gives each survey's time coverage and method, and ends with a This work row. The AI can rate each survey from its abstract or PDF; your edits mark a rating as verified.
In the paper
The table and the Related Work section go into the manuscript. The preview shows how the table will look in the PDF, with the same marks.
