Lab Quest

Walk the campus, help nine people with nine steps of research, and earn the professor's secret.

Keyboard, touch or gamepad. Sound stays off until you turn it on.

How to play

Arrow keys or WASD walk. Space or Enter talks and picks things up. On a phone, use the pad and the A button. P pauses.

A small adventure on a campus of our own making: a library, a lab, a quad and a clock tower. Everyone you meet teaches one step of the research process, from the question to publishing (publish or perish, they say). Finish all nine and the professor has a secret for you.

What you will learn

  • The research process end to end: question, protocol, search, screening, extraction, synthesis, writing, PRISMA and publishing.
  • What makes a research question answerable (PICO) and why the protocol comes before the search.
  • How the PRISMA 2020 flow diagram counts every record, and why the numbers must add up.

The Review Road

Drive through all eleven stops of a systematic review, from protocol to published, without hitting a single duplicate.

  • The eleven stages of a PRISMA 2020 review, in order, and what each one is for.
  • Why duplicates are merged before screening, and how they are found (DOI, PMID, titles).

About 8 minutes

Screen Machine

Include or exclude? Screen made-up abstracts against numbered criteria, then settle your conflicts with Reviewer B.

  • How to judge a record against numbered inclusion and exclusion criteria, and why every exclusion needs a reason.
  • Why two people screen every record on their own, and how conflicts are resolved.
